Dissolved Oxygen

Dissolved Oxygen means the amount of oxygen gas dissolved in water.

Studies suggest that 4.5 mg/L dissolved oxygen is the minimum amount needed to support a large and diverse fish population. Dissolved oxygen is essential for the respiration of fish, aquatic animals, micro-organisms and plants.

Light levels and temperature affects the dissolved oxygen levels. During the day, plants produce more oxygen than they consume through photosynthesis.

At night, plants use up more oxygen than they produce through respiration. Therefore, you must record the time of day you record your sample.

Readings range between excellent > 80% to poor < 40%.
